My journey to master the art of self-discovery began around the same time as did the global epi-phenomenom of 'awakening'. I've been on an awakened path for as long as it takes a person to attain a Ph.D. in college. The blood, sweat, and tears I've paid to gain the understanding I have today has cost more than it would've had I gone back to school for a PhD. (sigh) If only I'd been given the choice. Then again, I don't think I'd trade the enlightenment I've been blessed to receive for what my Grandmother called, an educated idiot.
Oftentimes, the word enlightenment triggers thoughts of an existence with less turmoil, less hardship, and less suffering. However, this is not the transformation that occurs as one becomes 'enlightened'. If anything, these obstacles only become more complex, and it causes a person to resist their new awareness. At its highest level, the person is transformed, not the circumstances. A person becomes an individual who exists in a disciplined state of harmonious balance, and in such an enlightened state, one is much more apt to overcome the world's discomforts.
Awakening was a rude upheaval of everything I thought I knew about life, myself, everyone I love, and everyone I thought loved me. It stripped me of my identity, my self confidence, my creature comforts, and the amenities of modern life, such as running water. All of that, as I've come to learn, is a kind of initiation process. For most everyone I've talked to, read about, or come across on the internet (which has been a most tremendous resource, and still is), has had their life turned upside down, though the manner in which it happened differs. It's this common situational thread that signifies one is awakening. At that point, one either chooses to remain oblivious to the frequency of higher consciousness or embarks on a journey of enlightenment that may restore them.
Here are a couple of videos that I came across that best describe what this journey is about and what its like. When your going through it, its comforting to know your not alone.
